Why I Built PolicyDoctor

My name is Garrett Downey, and I built PolicyDoctor because I wanted to create something that provides real value—something that solves a serious problem for families.

The idea began with my own family.

For years, my dad has told me that I need to go through his assets with him so I will know what exists, exactly where everything is located, who I need to contact, and what I need to do when he is no longer here to guide me.

But like many important family conversations, it never fully came to fruition.

The information existed, but it was spread across conversations, paperwork, folders, filing cabinets, accounts, and different places that only he fully understood.

Then I realized the larger problem:

Most families do not have a simple, secure Asset Hub where the right people can find everything they need to locate and access a family member’s assets when the time comes.

My dad recently described the problem in one sentence:

If we had a house fire, I would have to grab a handful of files from my cabinet and run—and I’m not completely sure I’d have everything my family would need.

Garrett’s Dad

That is not a plan. It is a fragile collection of information dependent on one person, one location, and one rushed decision.

A fire is only one way those records could be lost. Paperwork can also be damaged by water, misplaced during a move, accidentally discarded, stolen, degraded over time, or left inaccessible when the person who organized it is no longer able to explain it.

Even when the documents survive, the system can still fail if no one knows which files matter, where additional information is stored, which institutions to contact, or what steps to take first.

I am incredibly blessed to still have my dad here to walk me through these things. Many families never get that opportunity.

They lose someone they love and, while they are grieving, they are also left searching through paperwork, calling institutions, trying to locate assets and important records, and figuring out what to do next.

No family should have to face both at the same time.
